The thickest lowest tuned string is bottom E then the next thickest string is A then D, G, B and the thinnest highest tuned string is top E.

A good way to remember these notes is a mnemonic:

Every Aging Dog Goes Bald Eventually.

Once you have tuned your thickest E string the A string should sound the same as the note played on the 5th Fret of the E String. This is likewise for all string except the B String

ie
A=5th fret on E String
D=5th fret on A string
G=5th Fret on D String

B=4th fret on G String
E=5th fret on B String
